Arts Weekly Host Brenda Durant of the Greater Augusta Arts Council covers arts events for the week of December 6, 2008 and previews the upcoming holiday season.

The Greater Augusta Arts Council advances the arts and thus, enrich the quality of life in Augusta and the Central Savannah River Area. From the youngest child to their great, great grandparents and every socioeconomic and ethnic background they touch lives everyday. The smallest events are those that make us them most proud. The smiles of the children in the ArtScape Camp, the joy from the performers on the ethnic stage at Arts in the Heart or the elderly man taking his first painting lesson he has wished for since childhood. The community is built one by one in diverse individuals making up the incredible region Augusta calls home. The GAAC has been in Augusta for 35 years weaving the arts into lives.

Special Guest, Tyrone Butler of the Augusta Mini Theatre

Arts Weekly Host Brenda Durant of the Greater Augusta Arts Council covers arts events for the week of December 13, 2008.
Special guest interview with Tyrone Butler of the Augusta Mini Theatre. Mr. Butler will introduce their new School and the upcoming show "The Johnny Williams Story."

The Augusta Mini Theatres mission is to provide opportunities for the development of the artistic skills of area youth, with special attention to the needs of those at-risk; to facilitate participation in the arts for citizens underserved because of socio-economic condition; and to provide a venue for professional artists to share their expertise.

The Augusta Mini Theatre, Inc., Augusta Georgia’s first arts school to focus on multi-art disciplines, was founded on October 8, 1975, by Tyrone J. Butler as a 501© (3) non-profit agency. Prior to 1975, there were arts agencies offering one discipline, but no local agency offered dance, drama, visual arts, and music under one roof. With the philosophy that the arts are for all, the Mini Theatre was particularly inviting to low- to moderately low-income at-risk youth and senior citizens. Although offerings are relevant and open to the total community, the Mini Theatre, for the past thirty years, has filled a void by giving special attention to the artistic needs of these and other underserved segments of the community. No student has ever been turned away from their classes or performances because of the inability to pay. Over the years, thousands of persons have benefited from their program.
