The mission of this project is to unite Augusta’s rich cultural traditions with an optimistic new future for this newly
redeveloped area and welcome visitors into the Laney Walker and Bethlehem Neighborhoods. CV Foundry Apartments, LLC seeks to commission an artist/sculptor to design and construct a work of art that will contribute to the positive reinvestment and redevelopment of the emerging Laney Walker/Bethlehem Revitalization Area. The sculpture is intended to support the brand and character of Beacon Station and to enhance awareness of public art throughout Augusta. The public voting on the 3 finalists will coincide with the grand opening of Beacon Station in November 2019.
Proposals for a single, site specific, freestanding sculpture are being considered. This call to artists is open only to individuals and teams of artists and/or design professionals living in the Augusta River Region. Works submitted must be of a scale and made of material(s) suitable for long-term outdoor display. Minimum desired height for the final sculpture is 12’ or more from ground (inclusive of the installation base). All proposed work must be designed to withstand an outdoor, unmonitored, high traffic environment that will require minimal maintenance throughout the duration of its desired 15-year lifespan. The work must be securely anchored to the provided concrete base. All finalists will be subject to a technical review by an engineer and the City’s Public Art Advisory Panel. CV Foundry Apartments, LLC will coordinate the engineer’s review, if deemed necessary. An identification plaque will be provided near the final sculpture.
The site where the final sculpture will be installed is located on the corner of McCauley Street and Wrightsboro Road, at the intersection with RA Dent Blvd. This parcel of land serves as the front doorstep to the new apartment community, Beacon Station.
Concepts may evolve from a variety of source, including historical information sourced from the staff at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History as well as the Beacon Station icon graphic that serves as the symbol of Beacon Station. (above inset) Artists are free to interpret this image, explore and expand upon it within their concepts if they so choose. Visit www.beaconstationaugusta.com to learn more about Beacon Station.
