Hooked on Augusta, a group of local textile artists, is looking for volunteers who crochet or knit at any skill level to help create public art installations known as ‘yarnbombing’ for the downtown Augusta area. They also seek donations of yarn from the community to defray costs of the installations. Sign up is online here.
Four (4) regional artists have been selected for Golden Blocks Project Grants, which will bring public art and creative place-making to the Laney-Walker Historic District and Bethlehem District neighborhoods. The project is a collaborative effort to pay homage to the communities’ history, character, and future by several city organizations, in conjunction with the selected artists who will work with the Laney-Walker and Bethlehem communities to bring their creative vision to spaces in the area. The selected artists represent a variety of mediums, including visual and performing arts.
At the January 30 meeting of the Augusta Richmond County Commission, the Public Services Committee approved a request by the Greater Augusta Arts Council to place the “Art Cart” installation on the campus of the Law Office of the Public Defender. The Art Cart, developed and donated by Textron Specialized Vehicles in Fall 2017, is an installation created out of an actual golf cart that will provide public shaded seating, a bike rack, a way-finding map, and a solar-powered phone charging station.
